Traffic Offenders Programs
There are numerous traffic offender programs and driving education programs held throughout the Sydney metropolitan area as well as some of the regional areas.
The traffic offenders program is an option to Magistrates and Judges where a person has not yet been sentenced for a traffic offence. That is, the Court, prior to sentencing you, may ask/order you to complete the traffic offenders program.
It is also used by the Probation and Parole Service in the management of traffic offenders who are on existing probation or parole orders.
An increasing number of people are enrolling and competing the program before having their matter heard in Court. Completion of the traffic offenders program can demonstrates to the Court that you are:
1. Serious about ensuring that your driving skills are refreshed and where necessary improved;
2. That you do not want to recommit the same offence again;
3. That you take the charges against you seriously;
4. That you understand your social obligations as a driver; and
5. That you are remorseful of your actions.
The traffic Offenders Program are usually held one night per week and last 6 or 8 weeks.
However, there are shorter ‘intensive programs’ held in a limited number of locations such as Avalon and Lithgow. These do fill up quickly.
Participation in the programs may be taken into account by the Magistrate during ‘sentencing’, and can result in a less severe penalty.
At the end of the program, a Certificate of Completion will be faxed to the Court directly by the program coordinator. It will which will usually contain your feedback as well as take into account any changes of attitude you showed since participating and completing the traffic offenders program.
